KHS NHS Bylaws
Article l -- Name
Section 1. The name of this chapter shall be the Kingsford High School Chapter #1507 of the National Honor Society of Secondary Schools.

Article ll -- Purpose
Section 1. The purpose of this chapter shall be to create enthusiasm for scholarship, to stimulate a desire to render service, to promote leadership, and to develop character in the students of Kingsford High School.

Article lll -- Definition
Section 1. The principal shall reserve the right to review all activities and decisions of this chapter. The principal shall choose the members of the Faculty Council. The principal also has all rights as described by the NHS Constitution.
Section 2. Any matters concerning the disciplining of dismissal of candidates shall first be brought before the Faculty Council, the advisor, and the principal for discussion. Any recommendations must be submitted to the principal, who shall reserve the right to make any final decisions.
Section 3. The principal shall receive appeals in case of non-selection of candidates and the disciplining or dismissal of members.
Section 4. The active membership of this chapter shall have the ability to purpose and ratify amendments to the by-laws. Ratification shall be based on a two-thirds majority vote of members present.

Article lV -- Membership
Section 1. Members in this chapter will be admitted during the first semester of their junior or senior year based on scholarship, leadership, service, and character.
Section 2. Members must maintain a GPA of 3.5, remain involved in extra-curricular activities, and perform 16 (sixteen) documented non-class time hours of school and/or community service per semester (including summer). Members are expected to be actively involved in the Society and must attend meetings, unless excused by the advisor. Members present will sign an attendance sheet at the meetings. Failure to complete documented service hours or an unexcused absence from two consecutive meetings could result in disciplinary action, including loss of membership.
Section 3. Members must participate in at least one voluntary event.

Article V -- Members
Section 1. Students who have maintained a 3.5 GPA for four or more semesters will be notified of their eligibility in September of their junior or senior year. The candidate must have been enrolled as a student as a student at Kingsford High School during the semester preceding selection.
Section 2. The application includes an evaluation of Scholarship, Service, Leadership, and Character. Three teachers of the candidate's choice must fill out the NHS Character Information Form and return it to the NHS advisor. The candidate must have a total of seven (7) points or higher on the character rating scale. Other administrative and faculty input related to related to a candidate's Character, as well as Leadership and Service will be used by the Faculty Council in the selection process. Service and Leadership will be evaluated on a point/rubric system with requirements to score 44 out of 49 points with no fewer than 7 points coming from teacher Character evaluations.
Section 3. If a student falls below the qualifications for membership or misses two (2) meetings, he/she will receive a written warning.
Section 4. When a member is dismissed, he or she must be notified in writing and his/her emblem (pin) returned to the advisor or principal.

- Failure to perform sixteen (16) or more documented non-class time hours of school and/or community service by the end of the first semester (including summer) and twenty (32) documented hours per school calendar year. (exceptions will be made for juniors inducted in November as long as they meet 32 hours in the year.)
- Cheating or unethical classroom behavior. [results in automatic dismissal]
- Violations of laws and local ordinances. [results is automatic dismissal]
- Conduct unbecoming a National Honor Society Member. [results in automatic dismissal]
The dismissal procedure shall be as fallows:
- The member is notified in writing of the violation.
- The NHS advisor meets with the member in person.
- The member has the right to request a hearing of the Faculty Council.
- The Faculty Council may also call a hearing requesting the presence of the member.
- Dismissal is by a majority vote of the Faculty Council. TheFaculty Council may also determine other penalties for violations, such as school and/or community service for numbers 1 and 2.
Section 6. Members transferring from this school will be given a letter signed by the principal and advisor indicating member status.

Section 1. The general meetings of this chapter shall be held as necessary during the school year on days designated by the advisor and/or officers.
Section 2. The chapter's officers for the year shall be elected during the spring of the preceding year.
Section 3. The advisor or president may call special meetings.
Section 4. All meetings shall be open and held under the supervision of the NHS advisor.

Section 1. There shall be the following elected officer positions in this chapter: president, vice-president, secretary, treasurer, historian, parliamentarian, blood drive chair-person. In the event that the specific duties of a singular position require additional assistance, a co-chair for parliamentarian and blood drive chair can be elected. If the president cannot fulfill his/her duties, the vice-president will serve.
Section 2. A majority of votes cast by those NHS members present at the last meeting of the school year will elect all officers and chairs.

- Make plans in conference with chapter advisors.
- Oversee all general membership committees.
- Give a speech at the Academic Honors Banquet.
- Preside over the induction ceremony.
- Give one of the speeches at the induction ceremony.
- Attend all executive committee meetings.
- Take duties of president if he/she cannot fulfill them.
- Serve as both vice-president and secretary if secretary cannot fulfill duties.
- Give a speech at the Academic Honors Letter Breakfast.
- Give one of the speeches at the induction ceremony.
- Attend all executive committee meetings.
- Keep detailed minutes of meetings.
- Record member attendance at National Honor Society activities.
- Take minutes and post minutes to website.
- Remind members of upcoming service projects.
- Serve as president if vice-president cannot fulfill the duties.
- Give one of the speeches at the induction ceremony.
- Attend all executive committee meetings.
- In conjunction with advisor keep accurate account records.
- Prepare finance information for faculty council, officers, and general members
- All activities of treasure shall be in accordance with school regulations.
- Take duties of vice-president if he/she cannot fulfill them.
- Give one of the speeches at the induction ceremony.

- Record and digitize documents and artifacts.
- Maintain files of membership and chapter history.
- Maintain/monitor press releases, social media, and website communications.
- Prepare gallery of artifacts for induction ceremony.
- Attend all executive committee meetings.
- Maintain adherence to by-laws through informing members of protocols and procedures.
- Digitize by-laws.
- Monitor volunteer/service hour documentation of members to ensure membership eligibility.
- Attend all executive committee meetings.
- Organize and communicate information related to implementation and execution of blood drives.
Article lX -- Presider of Meeting
Section 1. The president will preside over the meeting, calling upon officers to explain pertinent information. Robert's Rules of Order will be used as a guide at meetings.

Article X -- Method and Procedure for Ratification of By-laws
Section 1. Any by-laws stated in this constitution of this chapter may be altered, amended, or ratified by a two-thirds vote of members present within the chapter.
Section 2. The challenger of the current by-law must propose a specific ratification.
Section 3. The proposed amendment should only be held for discussion if the executives of the chapter vote by majority to do so.
Section 4. Should the executives vote to reject the proposal, a personal discussion may occur if needed. The rejected proposal will then be dead and may not be replaced.
Section 5. Should the ratification pass through the executives, the chapter must vote by two-thirds of members present in favor for the ratification to occur. Once it is ratified, it may not be changed unless a new specific ratification is proposed.
